About My Research Reports

[dc]I[/dc] often get questions about the research I write for Waverly Advisors: what it is, who it is for, how it’s different than a “newsletter”, how to use it, and many others. I thought I would just write a short blog post to answer some of those questions here.

Waverly Advisors publishes technical/tactical research on all major asset classes. We cover futures, currencies, and stocks from the highest level (developed/emerging/frontier markets), through sectors, to individual names. We publish in-depth weekly reports and a concise daily update. The weekly report (Monday morning) is designed to give a comprehensive overview of developments in major markets, as well as, critically, laying out the markets in which we see tactical edges. The daily update is a quick read, focusing mainly on trade entries and updates to stop levels, with a look at the most important developments in markets through the week.

WA LogoOur work is based on a blended quantitative/discretionary framework. If my writing and trading approach here and in my book resonates with you, then you will likely find something of interest in our research. No one can predict the future—this (almost) goes without saying. However, there are points where markets show structures that support a probable resolution in one direction or another. First of all, we identify those markets which offer what we call a “tactical edge”—a market that has a statistical tendency for a particular type of movement, whether directional or a shift in volatility conditions. If a market has no edge, we advise technically-oriented traders to avoid those markets until something changes. However, when there is an edge, we explain it, clarify the relevant timeframe (our clients cover everything from intraday traders to multi-year investors), and give precise entry and exit criteria for trades designed to capitalize on the current edge in that market.

A few things distinguish our work from many of the other research products: we only use tools that have a verifiable, statistical edge in the market. Here is where we part ways with so many of the newsletter writers and pundits who have strong convictions on markets—we have no “convictions”. All we have (all anyone can truly have, with any degree of consistency) is biases supported by patterns in the market. Our commentary also avoids political opinion, posturing, and we do not rant about our own opinions. Any position we call, over any timeframe, is simply a trade. A trade is just a trade. We also do not use so many of the traditional tools of technical analysis that have not shown an edge in our studies, but what we do use, works.

Who are our clients? Our clients range from professional money managers to individual traders and investors to developing traders; there are segments and portions of our research that address each of these groups, and our clients find many different ways to use our work. For developing traders (as I know many readers of my blog are), one of the benefits of following our work is seeing a disciplined approach to trading applied in real time, and having that discipline enforced time and time again. We also have many clients who have an established methodology, say fundamental, and use our work for timing purposes, risk management, or a higher-level perspective. To that end, we have tools that offer significant statistical edges, and provide an uncorrelated input to an existing investment process. Other readers simply follow along with our trades and setups, sometimes adapting them to their own styles in different ways, and sometimes using them as a roadmap for the most likely ways markets will evolve.

I would like to share a sample of our work today. This link is a pdf of one of the Tactical Playbook, which is our flagship report for equity, currency, and commodity traders who focus on technical trading systems. If your interest is in longer term trading or options, we have other reports that address these more directly, so please drop us an email once you are on the trial and we will send you this work as well. To set up the trial, just click this link and fill out the brief form. (We do not resell contacts and will not spam your mailbox.) I am very proud of the work we do at Waverly Advisors, and am grateful for the support of each of our clients. Take a few moments today, review the sample, and we would love to have you read our work for the next few weeks to see if it might be a fit for you and your own trading/investment work.
